Welcome to our new retreat and training center in Downeast Maine, dedicated to supporting combat and service-disabled veterans. Nestled along the prestine North-Eastern coastal waters on the Atlantic, our new retreat center now in Phase One of operations offers a peaceful veterans an opportunity to find respite, engage in therapeutic activities, and receive comprehensive training and support.

The Retreat Center
Boots on the Ground in Maine (BOTG-ME) offers a variety of specialized programs designed to support veterans and their families, all at no cost to them. Each program is carefully developed to meet the unique needs of our veterans. We understand that the journey of rehabilitation is continuous, with evolving needs as veterans and their families move through different stages. We are committed to providing our veterans and their families with transformative opportunities to grow and discover resilience both individually and collectively.
Why did we pick Maine?
We chose Maine as the home for Boots on the Ground’s retreat and residency programs for combat injured and service connected disabled veterans because of its unparalleled natural beauty, serene environment, and unique opportunities for healing and adventure. Maine offers a tranquil setting with vast forests, abundant wildlife, and a peaceful atmosphere that provides a perfect backdrop for recovery and rehabilitation. The calmness and natural beauty of the state are essential for veterans dealing with combat wounds and PTSD, offering a much-needed respite from the stresses of daily life.
One of the standout features of Maine is its proximity to the ocean. Our location allows us to offer unique scuba diving programs that not only provide physical benefits but also help in building confidence and fostering a sense of accomplishment. Scuba diving has been shown to have therapeutic effects, particularly for those suffering from PTSD, as it encourages mindfulness, reduces anxiety, and promotes relaxation through the rhythm of breathing and the buoyancy of water.

With nearly 100 acres available to our veterans, and a vast coastline on the Atlantic, Boots on the Ground’s Maine Retreat & Training Center offers a diverse array of activities designed to provide veterans with opportunities for adventure, relaxation, and personal growth. Our programs take full advantage of the stunning natural beauty and varied landscapes of Downeast Maine, ensuring that every participant finds something to enjoy.
Backpacking and Camping Explore the majestic forests of Maine through our backpacking and camping programs. These activities provide a chance to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and reconnect with nature. Spend nights under the stars, enjoy the peace of the wilderness, and experience the camaraderie of fellow veterans around a campfire.
Hiking Along the Coastal Route Maine’s rugged coastline offers some of the most breathtaking hiking trails in the country. Our guided hikes along the coastal route allow veterans to experience the stunning ocean views, rocky cliffs, and diverse wildlife. These hikes are not only a physical challenge but also a source of mental rejuvenation and serenity.
Scuba Diving Dive into the clear, cool waters of the Atlantic with our scuba diving programs. Designed to promote relaxation and build confidence, scuba diving is particularly beneficial for veterans dealing with PTSD. The underwater world provides a unique sense of peace and accomplishment, helping participants to focus on the present moment and find inner calm. We provide both standard and adaptive scuba diving programs with some of the highest trained instructors and instructor-trainers in the world from PADI, SSI, NAUI, and other agencies.
Snowmobiling Experience the thrill of snowmobiling through Maine’s winter wonderland. Our snowmobiling adventures take veterans across snowy trails and through picturesque landscapes, offering an exhilarating way to enjoy the winter months. This activity is perfect for those seeking an adrenaline rush and a new way to explore the outdoors.
Four-Wheeling Our four-wheeling excursions provide an exciting way to traverse Maine’s diverse terrains. Whether it’s navigating forest trails or tackling rugged hills, four-wheeling offers a fun and adventurous way to build teamwork and camaraderie among participants. This activity is ideal for those who enjoy a mix of challenge and excitement.
Lighthouse Tours Maine is famous for its historic lighthouses, which have guided sailors safely along the rugged coastline for centuries. Our guided lighthouse tours take veterans to some of the most iconic and picturesque lighthouses in the area. Participants will learn about the history and significance of these maritime landmarks while enjoying breathtaking ocean views. These tours offer a peaceful and reflective experience, perfect for those seeking a deeper connection with Maine’s coastal heritage.
Excursion to President Roosevelt’s Home in Canada A highlight of our excursion program is a visit to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s beloved summer home on Campobello Island, located just across the Canadian border. This historic site offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of America’s most influential leaders. Veterans will have the opportunity to explore the beautifully preserved cottage, gardens, and surrounding natural areas. The excursion includes a guided tour that delves into the history of the Roosevelt family and their time spent on the island. This trip is not only educational but also provides a tranquil and inspiring setting for reflection and appreciation of history.
